POSITION TITLE:     School Bus Driver / Maintenance Worker              

DEPARTMENT:            Sk’elep School of Excellence 

SUPERVISOR:              Sk’elep School Principal        

TERMS:                       Full-Time, Permanent

Purpose of Position:

 

The Bus Driver is responsible for transporting students safely to and from school and on-call school related field trips. The Maintenance Worker will be responsible for the general maintenance of the school and grounds. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

Bus Driver:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Sk’elep and TteS policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Adheres to all traffic and safety procedures and regulations in the operation of their bus to ensure passenger safety.
  • Pick up and drop off students at designated locations on the bus route.
  • Works with supervisor to develop and update bus routes as needed.
  • Adhere closely to the established schedule as approved by the School Principal, which is placed visibly on the bus
  • Not leave the bus when students are on board until the bus has been turned off, brakes are set, and key has been removed from the ignition
  • Ensure the safety of students getting on and off the bus, crossing the street, etc.
  • ensure students follow the rules.
  • Maintain safety and order on the school bus. 
  • Monitor student behaviour on the bus and document and report any misbehaviors to the School Principal and to student’s parents when appropriate.
  • May be required to assist physically and mentally handicapped students when transporting them.
  • Shall pre-trip their bus prior to driving it for the condition of headlights, brakes, steering apparatus, tires, windshield wipers, horns, and other mechanical features affecting the safety of the children on the bus.  The driver shall not transport students unless the bus is safe to operate.
  • Maintain contact with the school as necessary.
  • Perform basic maintenance including but not limited to:
    • Sweeping and cleaning the interior of the bus before or after each trip
    • Perform minor repairs to seats, etc.
    • Keep the bus well ventilated and/or heated at all times
    • Fueling the bus prior to or after bus runs
    • Deliver and pick-up bus for regular maintenance appointments.
  • Ensure all licensing requirements are met and up to date. 
  • Ensure vehicle insurance is current and renewed.   Intention of above statement
  • Report all student accidents/incidents to the School Principal
  • Report road conditions, safety concerns, disruptions to bus routes, etc. to the School Principal
  • Familiarizes children with safety regulations and procedures.  Instruct the students at least twice a year on emergency evacuation drills such as:
  • Use of the Emergency Door
  • Safe Operation of the Windows
  • Proper use of the fire extinguisher

In the case of an accident,

  • Ensure that all students are accounted for and safe.
  • The driver must not make any statement that may reflect liability for the accident
  • Complete and file Driver Report with the School Principal, or designate, within 24 hours of accident

The driver shall:

  • Not permit anyone other than themselves to operate the bus without consent of the School Principal
  • Not engage in unnecessary conversations with anyone while the bus is in motion.
  • Never drive backwards on the school grounds until the driver has looked behind, sounded the horn, and placed a responsible person/pupil to guard the rear
  • See that all doors are kept closed while the bus is in motion
  • Bring the bus to a complete stop before taking on or letting off students.  Whenever possible the driver shall stop off the pavement, at a place where the road may be clearly seen for several hundred feet in either direction.  The driver shall always signal to drivers coming up from the rear before stopping or turning.
  • Not use the school bus for any purpose other than transporting students to and from school without consent of the School Principal

 

Maintenance Worker:

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Sk’elep and TteS policies, standards and procedures
  • Performs cleaning activities such as dusting, mopping, sweeping, shoveling, as necessary
  • Performs minor fixes such as repairing broken locks, filling gaps in walls, etc.
  • Checks control panels and electrical wiring to identify issues
  • Installs appliances and equipment
  • Performs playground and yard tasks as required
  • Conducts maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, plumbing, small appliances, etc.
  • Inspects and troubleshoots equipment and systems (eg. kitchen, ventilation)
  • Monitors functionality of safety systems (eg. fire alarm, sprinkler system)
  • Collaborates with workers and other professionals during renovations, etc.
  • May perform other tasks as requested by the principal

 

 

 

Professional Certification, Education and Experience: 

 

Bus Driver:

  • Class 2 Drivers License with required endorsements (e.g., Air brakes) and clean driver’s abstract with at least five years accident free driving experience.
  • Minimum one year bus driving experience
  • Criminal Record Check—Vulnerable Sector
  • Grade 12 or equivalent
  • Previous training/experience in a similar position
  • Criminal Record Check

 

 

Supervision or Training Duties:

 

Bus Drivers have the authority to maintain order on the bus - all cases requiring disciplinary action shall be reported to the School Principal on a form provided to the bus drivers for this purpose.

 

 

Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain order and safety on the bus.
  • Ability to communicate and maintain effective working relationships with parents, students, teachers, principals and other employees.
  • Judgement is required to handle various types of situations that may involve unusual circumstances (e.g. students who missed their bus stop; ability to remain calm if an accident occurs; ability to navigate through inclement weather, etc.)
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards/safety precautions associated with transit work activities.
  • High degree of sensory attention required. Ability to watch the road and the children, being always alert and listening to surroundings.
  • Bus runs are no longer than an hour or so
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to take direction and work with minimum supervision
  • Very good communication and interpersonal skills

 

Assets but not required:

 

  • Member of the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc" (formerly known as Kamloops Indian Band)
  • First Nations Ancestry
  • Ability to speak Secwepemc language.
  • Basic First Aid

 

 

Special Requirements

 

  • Basic knowledge of equipment, etc. to perform maintenance tasks
  • Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing and electrical systems
  • Experience using hand and electrical tools
  • Ability to read technical manuals and drawings
  • Physical stamina and dexterity

 

 

 

HOURS OF WORK:      Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE:                Starting at $25.98-$28.70 depending on education & experience
