POSITION TITLE: Type 3 Wildfire Crew Member / Forestry Worker (3 Openings)
DEPARTMENT: Emergency Planning Preparedness Department
SUPERVISOR: Emergency Planning Coordinator
TERMS: Full-Time, Term until March 15, 2025

Purpose of Position:
The purpose of this position is to provide safe, efficient, and professional wildland fire suppression and wildfire mitigation and preparedness operations working under the direction of the Type 3 Wildfire Crew Leader.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Type 3 Wildfire Crew Member is accountable for:
- Maintaining individual job safety
- Maintaining fire line readiness
- Ensuring training certifications are up to date
- Gathering critical information pertinent to daily assignments
- Maintaining a safety conscious and professional attitude during project work as well as on and off the fire line
- Working alongside BCWS crews and personnel
- Participating in fuel management and wildfire mitigation project work
- Participating in emergency prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and response, and recovery activities
- Participating in wildfire prevention and response community education and awareness events
Type 3 Wildfire Crew Member deliverables include:
- Maintaining administrative documents including training records and employee timesheets
- Quick, efficient, and effective wildfire response in accordance with the BCWS standards
- Adhering to safe work policies and professional conduct during project work as well as on and off of the fire line
- Adhering to Incident Command System (ICS) protocols
Professional Certification, Education and Experience:
Certifications:
- WorkSafe Recognized OFA Level 1 and Transportation Endorsement
- S-100 Basic Fire Suppression and Safety or equivalent (Annual Re-currency)
- S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance
- ICS 100 Incident Command System 100
- Acceptable Criminal Record Check
Skills and Abilities:
- Physically fit and capable of physical labour
- Capable of navigating rugged terrain in adverse conditions
- Able to carry heavy object (50 lbs) long distances over difficult terrain
- Strong verbal and written communication
- Safety conscious
- Team oriented – works well with others
- GPS and/or compass back country navigation
Assets, but not required:
- Class 5 Drivers License
- Highschool Diploma
- Post secondary Forestry or Resource Management education (in progress or completed)
- High level of fitness or above average sports achievement
- Previous wildland firefighting experience with a government agency
- Forestry work experience (i.e., logging, planting, and silviculture)
- Other resource based work experience (i.e., oil and gas, mining, and farming)
- Extensive outdoor and wilderness experience (i.e., hunting, trapping, fishing, and back country activities)
- Volunteer Fire Department experience
- WorkSafe BC recognized OFA Level 3
- S-212 Fireline Communications
- S-230 Intro to Supervision (Single Resource Leader / Introduction to Supervision)
- S-241 Fire Assessment
- WorkSafe BC recognized Powersaw Operator Certificate
- WorkSafe BC Danger Tree Assessor Certificate
- BC Forest Safety Council Faller Certificate
Supervision or Training Duties:
- Participate in all operational job required training courses
- Maintain certifications required for this position
Tools / Equipment
Equipment:
- VHF Portable Radio
- Navigation devices including GPS unit and compass
Tools:
- Fireline hand tools
- Chainsaw
Special Requirements:
- Minimum of 18 years of age
- Completed the annual Par Q and You Self Screening Assessment
- Pass the Type 3 Wildfire Crew Fitness Test
- Ability to travel if necessary
- Ability to work in high stress environments
HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
PAY GRADE: $25.98-$28.70 depending on education & experience
