POSITION TITLE:     Museum Curator/Exhibit Educator            

DEPARTMENT:            Language and Culture Department

SUPERVISOR:              Language & Culture Manager

Purpose of Position:

 

The Curator is responsible for implementing and managing exhibitions and producing and conducting related educational material and workshops. The Curator is also responsible for acting as the public face of the museum through conceptualizing exhibitions and doing outreach for organizations by providing instructional and educational activities.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  1. Strategic Leadership
  • Leads the Development and co-ordination of Museum exhibits, tours, workshops, and related activities.
  • Collaborates with the Museum Registrar and in overseeing changes and alterations relating to Museum renovations, and installation/deinstallation of museum exhibitions and displays.
  • Coordinates new display areas using a variety decorating techniques according to established themes and patterns.
  • Work with or help oversee correspondence with various businesses and contractors, such as printers, and fabrication companies in the development of museum displays and advertising.
  • Works alongside the Museum Registrar in rebuilding and refinishing displays to ensure they follow National Museum Standards.
  • Work with other museum staff to recreate and maintain up to date museum policies and procedures.

 

  1. Community Relations
  • Liaises with professional artists, traditional knowledge keepers, Secwepemc Elders, and other cultural institutions to form collaborative projects that promote the transfer of knowledge and traditional teachings.
  • Promotes the growth of the Museum and works with the Museum Registrar when acquiring items to augment and enrich the Museum.
  • Works alongside the Multi-media Specialist and other Museum Staff to develop museum related advertising, promote exhibitions through print and digital media.
  • Works collaboratively with the Museum Registrar in the handling, storage, and transportation of exhibits and loans to other museums, as required.
  • Sit on various committees relating to the museum, tourism, or other cultural organizations within Kamloops as needed.
  • attend various museum conferences and events to develop connections with other museums and to stay up to date with the latest museum and curatorial and educational practices and trends.

 

  1. Public Engagement
  • interpreting the museum’s collection with critical depth through:
    • Creating plans and layouts
    • Developing annual exhibition program schedules
    • Developing didactics and other written components
    • Researching artifacts and related artistic techniques
    • Developing Informational literatures, and graphic materials
  • Prepares and develops exhibition catalogues and publications and delivers workshops and lectures related to the Museum collections and exhibitions as needed.
  • work with the Multi-media Specialist in the development of technology displays, web-based displays, and social media content.
  • promote the revitalization of language history and culture.

 

  1. General Requirements

 

  • Document and retain information, files and materials relating to prior exhibits, workshops, and related educational programing.
  • assist in the organization and maintenance of display areas for artifacts and other museum materials, ensuring that the care, preservation, and maintenance of displayed items are in accordance with national museum standards as needed.
  • works collaboratively with the Museum Registrar in arranging new acquisitions for storage or display according to national museum standards.
  • Prepares reference aids such as exhibit inventory lists, catalogue lists and background information on artifacts.
  • Uses and maintains hand and electrically powered woodworking tools and machines; maintains a bench and workshop area in a neat and orderly condition; maintains records related to the work.
  • Reconstructs, adapts, and refinishes old display areas; cleans, and restores old furnishings, fixtures, and artifacts.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the TteS policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Language and Culture Department and TteS.

 

  • Other duties as directed by Language and Culture Department Manager or Museum Administrator: singing, dancing, drumming, tobacco offering, and traditional prayers and welcoming,

 

 

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in History, Arts, First Nation Studies and/or other related disciplines.
  • Completion of a Museum Studies diploma or equivalent, or willingness to complete.
  • Minimum (2) years previous Fine Arts, history, or heritage collections experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of Secwepemc culture, history and lifestyle is required.
  • Familiarity with Secwepemc Language is required, a language proficiency certificate would be an asset.

 

 

Financial Responsibility:

 

  • Propose a new budget for each new exhibition.
  • Maintains permanent and temporary exhibitions within the allotted budget.
  • Proposed budget for the purchase of museum educational material and supplies
  • Contribute to the development of grant proposals and reports for funding related to the museum’s exhibits, education, and related infrastructure.

 

Supervision or Training Duties:

 

  • Oversee and provide direction or training to term contract workers, summer student employees and volunteers as related to museum tours, workshops, exhibits and other related educational material.
  • Enroll and Complete programs and training courses in museum studies as required to uphold national museum standards and attend various museum conferences and events to develop connections with other museums and to stay up to date with latest museum and curatorial practices and trends.

 

Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Considerable knowledge of Collections Management according to recognized provincial and national museum standards and practices, including artifact cataloguing, storage techniques and basic and preventative conservation procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of museum and curatorial theory and practice, design, construction, condition reporting, label and signage preparation, exhibition installation, lighting, hanging and placement.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan and organize personalized work methods and procedures within established guidelines.
  • Ability to develop engaging and interactive display layout and design while abiding by accepted museum standards.
  • Ability to operate and maintain hand and electrically powered woodworking tools and machines such as saws, routers, and drills.
  • Ability to maintain records related to the work.
  • Must have the required skills such as strong interpersonal, diplomatic and negotiation skills.
  • Knowledge of BC Provincial School Curricula.
  • Must have extensive and thorough knowledge of Secwepemc language, history, and culture.
  • Ability to present information to audiences in an engaging manner.
  • Ability to verify, research and collect data and prepare reports and other documents.
  • Proven ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in multi-cultural settings.           

 

Special Requirements:

 

  • Class 7 or Class 5 driver’s license.
  • Knowledge of finish carpentry and interior decorating methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of local, national, and international museum community, not-for-profit sector and government services including funding sources available for museums.

HOURS OF WORK:      Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE:                Starting at $30.53-$33.72/hour depending on education & experience
