POSITION TITLE: Youth Coordinator

Purpose of Position:
This position is responsible for the implementation of comprehensive youth programming that will further develop the education, skills and employment opportunities for TteS youth members aged 13-30. This includes recruiting students/program staff, coordinating training, academic and work placements, providing support to students, collaborating with project partners, industry, and certification governing bodies, and administering and evaluating training and education programs.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Administration and coordination of youth academic, trades, training and employment readiness programs; provide and coordinate additional supports and services for TteS youth, where appropriate:
- Implement trades, training and employment readiness programs, in collaboration with relevant TteS staff, funders, industry partners and training providers;
- Collaborate with and provide supports to training providers in the delivery of youth education, trades and training and any other relevant programming;
- Support youth in obtaining employment in their areas of interest; assist youth with exploring different industries to identify areas of interest and potential career paths;
- Provide academic and vocational guidance and counselling to youth furthering their education, training, or meeting their career goals;
- Manage youth training, work practicum and mentorship placements and workplace readiness supports;
- In collaboration with the manager, supervise youth participating in the program to provide support, foster youths’ self confidence and skills needed to succeed in the training/program and find employment;
- Build and maintain existing partnerships with the school district, education institutions and trades and training industries;
- Facilitate and organize in-community trades, training or employment readiness projects for TteS youth to further develop their employability opportunities;
- Work with the education team to assess youths’ academic abilities and work experience, and design and implement individual development plans required for achievement and program completion;
- Organize and facilitate partnership opportunities that will establish relationships with industry, including field trips to work sites, network opportunities and work search strategies;
- Recruit mentors to provide additional youth supports, including cultural and elder supports;
- Manage all necessary program reports by deadlines, including training and funding reports, internal budget reports and assessment reports;
- Coordinate third party and short-term training for youth as needed;
- Promote all academic, employment, trades and training programs throughout the education and training networks and in TteS community and recruit potential TteS youth to participate;
- Facilitate intake sessions to determine program suitability by conducting interviews, and completing assessments that identify barriers to academic achievement, employment readiness and retention for TteS youth;
- Provide extra supports to youth as needed to ensure retention, including providing additional instructional supports, recruiting mentors, counsellors, employment coaches and minimizing transportation;
- Ensure potential program/training teams are teaching age appropriate, safety and industry expectations for employment such as drug and alcohol testing, attendance requirements, certifications, etc.;
- Establish and maintain excellent rapport with TteS youth and the education/training team to support academic, social and employment counselling for youth;
- Facilitate and coordinate community employment readiness programs and projects to further develop the employability opportunities for TteS youth.
- Collaborate with education teams to assess youth’s abilities and work experience and design and implement individual youth development plans.
- Recruit mentors to provide additional employment readiness supports, including cultural and elder supports.
- Implement funding and partnership agreements that promote respect and acknowledgement between both parties, including developing and implementing programs and services that are designed to enhance TteS youth employment experiences.
- Manage all necessary program reports by deadlines, including training and funding reports, internal budget reports and youth assessment reports.
- Promote all TteS youth employment programs throughout TteS networks and in TteS community and recruit potential youth to participate.
- Provide extra supports to participating TteS youth as needed, to ensure employment retention, including providing additional instructional supports, recruiting mentors, counsellors, employment coaches and minimizing transportation and childcare barriers.
- Establish and maintain excellent rapport with TteS youth and the education team to support academic, social and employment counselling for youth.
- Ensure TteS youth meet funding criteria when applying for employment readiness programs.
- Keep accurate accounting records of all expenditures in the Youth Budget.
- Participate in all TteS educational fundraising initiatives, events and community activities.
- Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with TteS policies, standards, and procedures as directed by the Education Manager;
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters relating to the affairs of the Education Department and TteS.
- As a member of the Education Department, the Youth Coordinator is responsible for administrative tasks as required:
- Researching and applying for all external funding for youth trades and training programs and services, including all reporting to funders and training providers;
- Provide financial assistance for youth who qualify for TteS educational funding or need help applying for trades and training external funding;
- Process all invoices for employment readiness, trades and training expenses and administer financial records for these programs;
- Keep employment and training database current and up to date;
- Provide education, employment, or financial reports to the Education Manager as requested;
- Participate on internal or external committees that are beneficial to youth trades and training programs and services as needed and directed by Education Manager.
Professional Certification, Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Education, Arts, Social Work, Career Counseling or other relevant diploma.
- 3-5 years experience working with youth in these areas: education, life skill coaching, employment readiness, student assessment and First Nations mentorship.
- Experience with academic tutoring, prior learning assessments and student supports.
- Equivalent combination of education, training, and supervisory experience.
- Must possess a Valid first aid certificate.
- Working in an aboriginal setting is an asset.
Financial Responsibility:
This position administers the youth education, employment readiness, trades and training programs within the budget parameters, under the direction of the Education Manager.
Supervision or Training Duties:
This position trains and supervises TteS youth enrolled in programs, as well as relevant support staff, cultural mentors, elder mentors and other sub-contractors delivering youth training, employment or education programs and services.
Skills and Abilities:
- Extensive knowledge of Secwépemc culture, language, history and lifestyle is required.
- Considerable knowledge in the research, development, organization and coordination of educational, employment and trades programs.
- Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and work co-operatively with co-workers, agencies and the general public and when representing the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc.
- Educational requirements of educational institutions and funding programs.
- Excellent interpersonal, listening, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
- Strong analytical, organizational, coordinating, project management and planning skills.
- Ability to effectively supervise an education team, work effectively with youth/students, other stakeholders and members of the Education Department.
- Advanced computerized record keeping skills and versed in Microsoft word, excel and outlook applications.
- Ability to verify, research and collect data and prepare reports and other documents.
- Proven ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to build and maintain cooperative and productive relationships and effectively liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
Special Requirements:
- Must have a class 5 BC driver’s license, with preference to a class 4 driver’s license, and access to insured and reliable transportation.
- Must have excellent work attendance and ability to work overtime to provide necessary program supports outside of regular work hours.

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
PAY GRADE: Starting at $25.98 – $30.06 depending on education and experience.
