Purpose of Position:

 

The Principal/Administrator, reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, is responsible for the overall management, administration, leadership, supervision and operation of Sk’elep.  Responsibilities include ensuring the effective integration of Secwépemc culture, history and language into the educational curriculum within the Ministry of Education (MoE), and Federation of Independent Schools (FISA) standards, guidelines and requirements.

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Sk’elep, Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS), First Nations School Association (FNSA), Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Federation of Independent Schools (FISA) policies, standards, and procedures.

 

  • Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of Sk’elep/TteS.

 

  • Administers TteS Personnel Policies as they relate to all Sk’elep employees..

 

  • Ensures that all employees adhere to standards, practices, and by-laws as set out by Sk’elep, TteS, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC), First Nations School Association (FNSA), and any other funding sources.

 

  • Develops reports and correspondence to meet reporting obligations to the MoE, FISA, FNSA, INAC, and any other funding or regulatory agency.

 

  • Prepares, in consultation with the CAO and CFO, the annual capital and operating school budget.

 

  • Administers, authorizes and monitors all school related expenditures.

 

  • Develops and coordinates the strategic and operational planning of the school programs and activities.

 

  • Co-ordinates teaching activities within the school by administering personnel assignments, class sizes and scheduling.

 

  • Co-ordinates fund raising activities, identifies funding sources, and develops proposals to access funding from INAC and other sources for new and expanded projects and programming.

 

  • Manages all activities related to the recruitment, selection, evaluation, and progressive discipline of school personnel, ensuring that TteS policies, procedures and practices are adhered to.

 

  • Keeps abreast of new developments in education curriculum and administration, ensuring staff and key stakeholders are kept informed of emerging and developing practices.

 

  • Facilitates and ensures the personal and professional development of school staff and provides technical support

 

  • Manages and supervises the daily operations of Sk’elep activities, programs, staff and students.  

 

  • Designs and implements a Community Relations program, providing ongoing information regarding school activities, achievements, needs and direction to the Community.

 

  • Plans, implements and monitors a Kindergarten to Grade 7 program and curriculum, ensuring integration of Secwepmec and other First Nations Culture, History and Language.

 

  • Provides leadership in defining the schools vision and mission. Develops appropriate strategic plans to support the school in conjunction with the appropriate TteS Authorities and Committees.

 

  • Consults and co-ordinates with outside Educational agencies such as School District #73, as well as Federal, Provincial and First Nations Authorities.

 

  • Oversees administration of student discipline, initiating progressive and corrective action as required.

 

  • Coordinates the testing and assessment of students, making provision for students requiring adaptive/additional services as required and ensures instructional staff are trained in current recognition and assessment techniques.

 

  • Implements school growth plans, assessments and works collaboratively with staff, students, parents, and guardians to develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs).

 

  • Oversees and ensures the timely and safe transportation of students to and from school and on authorized school activities.

 

  • Directs and co-ordinates school maintenance services and the use of school facilities.

 

  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as required and as assigned by the Chief Administrative Officer.

 

 

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

 

•          Bachelor of Education (or equivalent Liberal Arts or Science Degree)

•          Masters of Education Administration or equivalent.

•          Valid BC Teaching Certificate

•          Five (5) years teaching experience, preferably in a First Nations environment.

•          Five (5) years Administrative experience, preferably in a First Nations Community.

 

 

Financial Responsibility:

 

Manages, in collaboration with the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the financial operations of the school.

Prepares, in collaboration with the CAO and CFO, the annual capital and operating school budget.

 

 

Skills and Abilities:

 

  • Proven leadership and management skills, preferably as an elementary school principal.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including proposal writing.
  • Knowledge, understanding and respect of First Nations culture and traditions.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with staff, students, parents and the Kamloops Indian Band and community.
  • Strong commitment to creating a school environment that fosters academic excellence.
  • Excellent interpersonal, tact and diplomacy skills.
  • Strong commitment to First Nations and community-based education.
  • Computer competency and familiarity with emerging technologies pertaining to instructional and management applications.
  • Current Criminal Records Check (CRC)

HOURS OF WORK:      Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE:                $97,921-$108,162 annually depending on education & experience
