POSITION TITLE: ISETS Museum Tour Guide (2 openings)

This is an outside-funded position. All applicants must meet the ISETS eligibility criteria below:
ISETS eligibility requirements:
- Eligibility will be confirmed to the right to funding of Aboriginal status, non-status, and Inuit students.
- Individuals must reside within the ISETS catchment area.
- All individuals applying for the Summer Student program are required contact the ATEC office (250-554-3556) to obtain a program referral from an ISETS employment counselor to confirm program eligibility before applying. Please provide contract # SS310-26032 to the counselor.
- Must be a minimum of 15 years of age at the time of hiring.
- Must be a student who was a registered full-time student during the previous academic year and is returning to school full-time in the following academic year.
- Must have a valid Social Insurance Number.
Purpose of Position:
The Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park (SMHP) is a built upon the principles and traditions of the Secwépemc Nation, which is comprised of 17 Bands spread throughout the interior of British Columbia. The SMHP’s mandate flows from this collective membership, and the Secwépemc Nation’s ownership and right to steward their cultural heritage resources. The Museum displays its collection on the bottom floor of the Annex Building which is owned and maintained by the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS). The public is invited to explore rotating and permanent exhibits Monday through Friday during open hours.
The purpose of this position is to assist the Museum Interpreter and potentially the Museum Cultural Educator in providing guided tours and workshops to guests and conduct research on the museum’s current exhibits. The position would also fill in for the Museum Administrator and other duties as assigned by SMHP staff. The incumbent reports to the Museum Registrar/Staff Supervisor to ensure appropriate activities and efficient operations of the Museum. The Museum Tour Guide is expected to operate with the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism.
Strategic leadership:
In collaboration with the Museum Registrar/Staff Supervisor, they will plan and develop long and short-term goals and objectives for their summer work.
Role of tour guides:
- Will serve as interpreters and educators for the Secwepemc Museum and Heritage Park and provide tours of the Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park
- Will research information on museum exhibits so they will be able to provide information to visitors and answer visitor questions, while being sensitive of visitor differences
- Potential to develop an information booth to be used at City of Kamloops and TteS events
- Will maximize guest experience with excellent service as tour guides
- Will assist the SMHP staff in creating handbooks, brochures, or teaching guides
- Will move materials including boxes (under 30 pounds) throughout the museum, utilizing proper safety protocols
- Will provide a welcoming atmosphere to visitors
- Will greet and welcome visitors, following TteS Welcoming Protocol
- Will keep informed about changes to the museum including history and current events
- Will ensure museum materials are properly maintained
- Will assist with scheduled tours outside regular museum hours
- Will maintain a clean exhibit and reception area
- Will learn and practice safety and emergency policies procedures
Professional Certification, Education, and Experience:
- Must be a current high school student in the fall of 2025 to meet eligibility requirements
- Understanding Secwépemc values and cultural protocols

- Willing to conduct research on museum exhibits and belongings
Museum Tour Guide Characteristics & Qualifications

Time Commitment
Full-Time employment; 35-hours per week (flexible work week). Additionally, Assistants must attend all training sessions.
Training & Orientation
The supervisor will provide training for the Museum Tour Guide
- Become comfortable with public speaking
- Learn how museums serve their communities
- Learn about TteS, SMHP history and current events
- Learn about Secwépemc Language, History, and Culture
- Participate in Secwepemctsín classes that may be available
HOURS OF WORK: 7-hour day shifts.
PAY GRADE: $22 per hour
