POSITION TITLE:     Archaeological Field Supervisor                   

DEPARTMENT:            Archaeology Department     

SUPERVISOR:              Assistant Manager    

TERMS:                       Full-Time, Permanent

Purpose of Position:

 

The Archaeological Field Supervisor will lead field programs. This position will supervise and participate in all field operations, including conducting archaeological and cultural surveys, testing, monitoring and data recovery in both lab and field settings. Compile and compose field notes, site forms and written reports.  All responsibilities are governed by the policies and bylaws of Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc and the BC Heritage Conservation Act and guidelines.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Office work (15%)
  • Assisting project managers with planning, logistics and administration.
  • Leading archaeological field programs under the direction of the TteS NRD project management team.
  • Drafting summary and interim reports.
  • Liaising with community members, clients and NRD personnel.
  • Makes recommendations, in consultation with supervisors and field staff, regarding the conservation and interpretation of archaeological findings.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the TteS policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Conducts fieldwork in accordance with the BC Heritage Conservation Act permits and Archaeology Branch Guidelines.
  • Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the TteS.

 

  • Field work (80%)
  • Archaeological monitoring, excavation, survey, and testing in a wide range of urban and remote locations.
  • Residential, municipal, industrial and resource extraction work.
  • Community based resource management and research projects.
  • Mentoring jr. staff in archaeological methodology and regulatory requirements.
  • Works safely as per TteS safety policy.

 

Other related duties as necessary (5%)

 

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

 

Must have a minimum Bachelor’s degree in archaeology or anthropology and/or sufficient field and supervisory experience in the Plateau Culture Area.

Must have minimum 2 years experience as a field supervisor in archaeology.  

Must have demonstrated leadership and communications skills.

Must possess Level 1 First Aid certificate or be willing to obtain training.

Must possess knowledge and experience adhering to occupational heath and safety regulations.

Must possess a valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence.

Must possess a clean driver abstract and maintain clean status throughout employment.

Must complete a Criminal Record Check and maintain clear status throughout employment.

Must be willing to take a preaccess drug and alcohol test and maintain throughout employment.

Must be physically fit and willing to work in challenging environments.

 

 

Financial Responsibility:

 

-Ensure accuracy and timely submission of personal and project timesheets and expenses.

 

Supervision or Training Duties:

 

Mentor community field crew members in the field and lab with regards to industry standards and procedures.

This position may supervise up to 6 field staff.

 

Skills and Abilities:

 

Experience supervising archaeological field crews  

  • Excellent supervisory and/or field management skills

• Familiarity with Secwepemc culture.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing.

Strong analytical, organizational, coordinating and planning skills.

Ability to collect and manage data and summary reports.

Ability to take initiative.

Strong tact and diplomacy.

• Strong teamwork and cooperation, problem solving and judgement skills.

HOURS OF WORK:             Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE:                        Starting at $35.97-$39.62/hour depending on education & experience
