POSITION TITLE: General Labourer / Light Equipment Operator (Two Positions)   

DEPARTMENT: Planning and Engineering                 

SUPERVISOR: Public Works Foreman                        

TERMS: Full-Time Permanent

Purpose of Position:

The purpose of the General Labourer / Light Equipment Operator position is to support the Public Works Department by ensuring a high level of service for the community.

 

Reporting to the Public Works Foreman, the General Labourer / Light Equipment Operator performs labour work of a varied nature under general supervision. Work involves the general maintenance of roads, buildings, grounds, collecting garbage; assisting with the installation of sprinkler systems and fences; repairing leaks and blockages in sprinkler systems; winterizing irrigation systems of various types, including the Pow Wow facilities. Assisting with the care of landscaping and lawns; and assisting with the set-up and cleanup for community events; operating a tractor, skid steer plate tamper, jumping jack, roller packer, and snowplough. The role supports the maintenance and repair of the Band’s infrastructure including water distribution and wastewater collection systems, and involvement in capital construction projects. The job involves outside work in all weather conditions, some exposure to dust, occasional handling of chemicals. The incumbent is required to exercise courtesy and tact with co-workers and the general public and to exercise ordinary care to ensure the safety of others.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

1.   Supports the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department including but not limited to the

following areas: (70%)

 

  • Public Works Yard and Shop
  • Waste Water Distribution
  • Heavy Equipment Operators
  • Water Distribution/ Seasonal Irrigation
  • Fleet Maintenance
  • Solid Waste Management
  • Landscaping (Community/CLC)
  • TteS Asset Management Programs
  • TteS Facilities
  • Construction Crews
  • Dam Operations
  • Community Events/Funerals
  • St Joseph Church & Graveyard
  • Emergency Response and Recovery

 

2.   Completes maintenance of the Band’s roads, parks, sports fields, trail systems, green spaces, playgrounds, urban forestry, cemetery, and lawns around Chief Louis Centre, and Powwow Grounds.  Includes mowing grass, trimming/pruning trees and hedges, and planting as required. (20%)

  • Operate power mowers, tractors, power trimmers, sod cutters, and other landscape maintenance equipment.
  • Operates small lawn tractors, rototillers, landscaping tools, and cleaning equipment.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with TteS policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Work on roads, maintaining boulevards, repairing and installing signs, and cutting weeds.
  • Cut grass, rake, fertilize and, water lawns, weed flower beds, prune shrubs and trees.
  • Cleans grounds of miscellaneous debris and picks up garbage as required.
  • Assist with water line maintenance, repairs to irrigation lines and sprinkler heads, and installations.
  • Cleans plugged sprinklers.
  • Winterization and seasonal start-up of irrigation systems and outbuildings, playgrounds, ballpark, Powwow grounds.

 

3.  Other related duties as necessary (10%)

 

Professional Certification, Education, and Experience:

• Must have grade 12 education or equivalent

• Must possess a valid Class 5 BC Drivers Licence.

• Class 1 Drivers License (with Air Brakes Endorsement) is an asset

• WCB Work Safe Training is preferred

• A Valid Standard First Aid ticket, Level 1 is preferred

• WHIMIS Training / Certificate is preferred

 

• Progressively more responsible experience in municipal operations, construction, and maintenance work setting.

• A knowledge base in roads, water, and wastewater utilities is an asset.

• The ability to read and understand construction plans, specifications, and drawings.

• Knowledge of parks and grounds maintenance techniques

• Knowledge of sprinkler system installation, repair, and maintenance.

• Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision.

• Ability to be flexible and adaptable to the environment.

• Self-motivated, and reliable.

• Ability to exercise courtesy and tact with co-workers and the general public ability to use computer applications.

• Strong ethics and knowledge of confidentiality.

• Ability to work in a cross-cultural setting.

• Good physical condition and the ability to lift 50 pounds.

HOURS OF WORK:      Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
