POSITION TITLE:         Student Support Teacher                 

DEPARTMENT:            Education Division

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

 

This position is responsible for implementing comprehensive academic support and teaching services that will further develop the education of TteS member students. This includes assuming teaching duties for elementary, secondary and adult basic education aged students. This position is responsible for the instruction and supervision of students in the assigned academic program.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Coordinating, planning, organizing and implementing appropriate instructional program in a learning environment that guides, supports and encourages elementary, secondary and adult basic education students to further develop their learning. (95%)
  • Teach one small group (at a time) of elementary, secondary or adult basic education students and support their academic achievement in subject areas of need.  
  • Provide tutoring to elementary, secondary or adult basic education students as needed.   
  • Plan, prepare and present lessons to meet the needs of each student who seek assistance from the Education Dept.
  • Assist with homework, tests and assignments as needed.
  • Organize the learning resources and environment and create displays to encourage a positive learning environment. Motivate students with enthusiastic and creative presentation.
  • Observe, assess and record student performance and development. For k-12 learners, provide feedback to parents and caregivers on student progress on a regular basis.  Manage student behaviour in a positive and proactive manner using different tools and supports to meet the individual and group needs of the students.
  • The teacher is responsible for maintaining student discipline.
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.
  • Participate in department, school, parent, and community meetings as necessary and required. As needed, work with Parents and Elders in the community to maximize their involvement in student learning.
  • Implement elementary, secondary and adult basic education support programs and services to TteS students in need of academic supports.
  • Collaborate and partner with local education institutions to ensure the delivery of academic programs within community.
  • Provide academic guidance to students furthering their post secondary education.
  • Provide tutoring supports to assist in advancing students’ academic needs.
  • Promote all academic and tutoring support programs throughout the education networks and in TteS community and recruit potential students to participate.
  • Provide academic and instructional support to students as needed to ensure student achievement and retention.
  • Establish and maintain excellent rapport with students and the education team to support academic achievement for students.
  • Develop and maintain a student data base of supports given to students.
  • Establish and maintain excellent rapport with students, refer them for academic, social or employment counselling as needed.
  • Provide quarterly education reports to the Education Manager and student demographic reports from the data obtained in TteS’ student data base.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with education institutions.
  • As part of the education team, assist in the planning, development and implementation of programs and services for the Education Department.
  • Participate in all educational fundraising initiatives.
  • Perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the TteS’ policies, standards, and procedures, and as directed by the Education Manager.
  • Maintain confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the Education Department and the TteS.

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in education with TQS Category 5 or equivalent and preference for those with a Master of Education Degree or equivalent.
  2. At least 5 years’ experience teaching elementary and secondary education and preference for those who also worked in adult education.
  3. Valid BC teaching certificate and member in good standing with the Ministry of Education Teacher Regulation Branch. Retired teachers with recently expired teaching certificates are welcome to apply.
  4. Experience with academic tutoring, learning assessments and student support.
  5. Equivalent combination of education, training, and supervisory experience.

  2. Demonstrated effective classroom management skills for maintaining a positive classroom environment.
  3. Excellent interpersonal, listening, multi-tasking and problem-solving skills.
  4. Strong analytical, organizational, coordinating, project management and planning skills.

 

Special Requirements 

 

  1. Must have excellent work attendance and ability to work overtime to provide necessary program support outside of regular work hours.
  2. For new hires, and for those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, no formal offer of employment will be made until an applicant completes and passes a criminal record check-vulnerable section.
  3. Have and maintain a valid Class 5 or 7 BC driver’s license as a condition of employment and have access to a reliable/insured vehicle.
  4. Travel as required.
  5. Demonstrated practice of confidentiality.

 

 

 

 

HOURS OF WORK:      Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE:                $30.53-$33.72 depending on education & experience.
