This is an outside-funded position. All applicants must meet the ISETS eligibility criteria below:
ISETS eligibility requirements:
- Eligibility will be confirmed to the right to funding of Aboriginal status, non-status, and Inuit students.
- Individuals must reside within the ISETS catchment area.
- All individuals applying for the Summer Student program are required to contact the ATEC office (250-554-3556) to obtain a program referral from an ISETS employment counselor to confirm program eligibility before applying. Please provide contract # SS310-26032 to the counselor.
- Must be a minimum of 15 years of age at the time of hiring.
- Must be a student who was a registered full-time student during the previous academic year and is returning to school full-time in the following academic year.
- Must have a valid Social Insurance Number.
Purpose of Position:
The purpose of this position is to assist museum staff in conducting research on residential school, provide guided tours and guided workshops for guests at the residential school and the Le Estcwicwey. The incumbent reports to the Language and Culture Manager to ensure appropriate activities and efficient operations of the Museum. The Monument Ambassador is expected to operate with the highest level of confidentiality and professionalism. The immediate supervisors in this position are the Manager and staff of the Language and Culture Department.
The Secwépemc Museum and Heritage Park (SMHP) is a built upon the principles and traditions of the Secwépemc Nation, which is comprised of 17 Bands spread throughout the interior of British Columbia. The SMHP’s mandate flows from this collective membership, and the Secwépemc Nation’s ownership and right to steward their cultural heritage resources. The Museum displays its collection on the bottom floor of the Annex Building which is owned and maintained by the Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS). The public is invited to explore rotating and permanent exhibits Monday through Friday during open hours. In response to the confirmation of Le Estcwicwéy̓ (The Missing) on May 27, 2021, TteS Ambassadors are the face of the SMHP by greeting and interacting with visitors while supporting the SMHP’s mission and sharing the history and current events of Le Estcwicwéy̓. Ambassadors promote and deliver walking tours and outreach activities under the supervision of the SMHP Administrator.

Strategic leadership:
In collaboration with the Language and Culture Department Manager and immediate supervisors, will plan, develop and long and short-term goals and objectives for their summer work as ambassadors.
Role as Monument Ambassadors:
- Provide Kamloops Indian Residential School Building Tours
- Help Le Estcwicwey̓ staff with Sacred Site visits and/or tours.
- Will host an information booth at all TteS events.
- Will maximize guest experience with excellent service as tour guides.
- Will assist the SMHP staff in creating handbooks or teaching guides.
- Will assist in providing supervision to students who are unable to participate in museum tours because of their disability.
- Will move materials including boxes (under thirty pounds) throughout the museum, utilizing a dolly or trolley, or as needed, of another staff member for heavier items.
- Will provide a welcoming atmosphere to visitors.
- Will serve as interpreters and educators of Le Estcwicwéy̓
- Will greet and welcome visitors, following TteS Welcoming Protocol
- Will keep informed about changes to the residential school, museum, or Le Estcwicwéy̓ history and current events.
- Will ensure Residential School, museum and Le Estcwicwéy̓ materials are properly maintained.
- Will assist with scheduled tours outside regular museum hours.
- Will research information on residential school, museum, and sacred site so he/she will be able to provide information to visitors and answer visitor questions, while being sensitive of visitor differences
- Will maintain a clean exhibit and reception area.
- Will learn and practice safety and emergency policies procedures.
Professional Certification, Education, and Experience:
- Must be a current high school student in the fall of 2025 to meet eligibility requirements
- Understanding Secwépemc values and cultural protocols

Time Commitment
Full-Time employment; 35-hours per week (flexible work week). Additionally, Ambassadors must attend all training sessions. This position includes significant evening and weekend work.
Training & Orientation
The supervises will provide training for the Monument Ambassadors.
Practice in becoming comfortable in public speaking.
Have desire to learn about TteS, residential school, museum, and Le Estcwicwéy̓ history and current events.
Willing to learn Secwépemc Language, History and Culture
Willing to participate in Secwepemctsín classes
Willing to learn more about Secwepemc history, culture, songs and dances.
HOURS OF WORK: 7-hour day shifts.
PAY GRADE: Starting at $22.00 per hour.
