Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) is a fast-growing vibrant organization committed to the development and progress of its Band Members and Community. As such, TteS invites applications from qualified, highly motivated and dynamic individuals to fill the following position.
POSITION TITLE: Elder in Residence (MALE)
DEPARTMENT: Sk’elep School of Excellence
SUPERVISOR: School Principal
TERMS: 6 hours/day Monday - Friday
JOB REFERENCE: 2025-082
PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Elder in Residence is recognized and respected in the community as an Elder with such attributes as having knowledge of and practicing the Secwepemc traditional teachings. As an Elder in Residence you will be expected to provide guidance and assistance to students and staff in addition to promoting cultural, traditional and spiritual awareness and understanding through storytelling, talking circles, songs, dance and participative activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Impart tradition, knowledge, culture, values and lessons using orality and role modeling traditional practices.
- Share the Secwepemc vision of life through Secwepemc philosophies and those handed down the through ceremonies and traditional teachings.
- Sharing their wisdom to assist students to grow as strong people, open to developing their knowledge and skills, and pride in their ancestry.
- Facilitate ceremonies.
- Participate in and contribute to meetings, workshops and training for staff.
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Sk’elep policies, procedures and standards and as directed by the School Principal
REQUIRED ABILITIES, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Knowledge and familiarity of Secwepemc culture and traditions, including dance and songs.
- Ability to plan, organize and facilitate traditional ceremonies including protocols for speaking in public, opening prayers and providing blessings.
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills.
- Strong relationship building skills with children and adults.
- Ability to provide cultural perspectives and advice on interactions to children and adults.
- Friendly and supportive to school children, staff, visitors and guests in the school.
- Current Criminal Records Check (Vulnerable Persons).
REQUIRED LICENCES, CERTIFICATION, ETC.
- Knowledge of and ability to speak the Secwepemc language.
- First Nations ancestry.
ASSETS
- TteS Band male member with required qualifications.
- Basic computer skills.
HOURS OF WORK: 6 hours/day Monday - Friday
PAY GRADE: Starting at $27.32/hour or more dependent upon experience
