POSITION TITLE: A3 – Supervising Archaeologist
DEPARTMENT: Knúcwmens le Sxwixwéytemc Archaeology Services Ltd. (KSAS)
SUPERVISOR: Operations Manager
TERMS: Full-Time, Permanent

Purpose of Position:
The purpose of this position is to represent and assist KSAS by leading field programs, and assisting senior staff with program development as required. This position will supervise and participate in all field operations, including conducting archaeological and cultural surveys, testing, monitoring and data recovery in both lab and field settings. Compile and compose field notes, site forms and written reports. All responsibilities are governed by the policies and bylaws of Tk’emlups te Secwepemc.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Office work
- Leading archaeological field programs under the direction of the TteS project management team; assisting with or contributing to the design of archaeological field and research programs, as required.
- Conducting background research and report reviews.
- Prepare and distribute regulatory and heritage permit documentation
- Planning and logistics for field and research projects, including preparation of safety documentation, as required.
- Liaising with community members, clients, TteS personnel, and Archaeology Branch personnel.
- Making recommendations, in consultation with the project team and field staff, regarding the conservation and interpretation of archaeological findings.
- Undertaking analysis and preparing technical reports.
- Preparing summary, interim, and final reports.
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the TteS policies, standards, and procedures.
- Completes final written reports in accordance with the BC Archaeology Branch permit requirements.
- Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the TteS and will not divulge any confidential or proprietary information for profit.
- Fieldwork
- Leads archaeological monitoring, excavation, survey, and testing in a wide range of urban and remote locations.
- Directs residential, municipal, industrial and resource extraction projects in the field ensuring work is conducted in accordance with project scope, and regulatory requirements.
- Leads community-based resource management and research projects.
- Provides direction and mentorship to junior staff in archaeological methodology, field standards, documentation practices, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensures field equipment, spatial data collection tools, and fleet vehicles are properly prepared, maintained, and used appropriately.
- Work safely as per TteS safety policy and KSAS safety program.
- Other related duties as necessary
Professional Certification, Education and Experience:
- Must possess a bachelor’s or graduate degree Archaeology/Anthropology/First Nations Studies/Natural Resources with sufficient field and supervisory experience in the Interior Plateau Region.
- Or a combination of education, training, and field experience, in similar type of field work with a minimum 5 years experience conducting cultural heritage assessments work within Secwépemcúl’ecw.
- Must have experience working in consulting archaeology.
- Must have demonstrated report writing, leadership and communications skills.
- Must possess Level 1 First Aid certificate.
- Must possess knowledge and experience adhering to occupational heath and safety regulations.
- Must possess a valid BC Class 5 driver’s licence and experience with ATV’s, UTV’s, snowmobiles.
- Must possess a clean driver abstract and maintain clean status throughout employment.
- Must complete a Criminal Record Check and maintain clear status throughout employment.
- Must be willing to take a preaccess drug and alcohol test and maintain throughout employment.
- Must be physically fit and willing to work in challenging environments.
Financial Responsibility:
Ensure accuracy and timely submission of time sheets and Labor, Equipment, Material (LEM) time tickets that document daily work, resources, and materials for invoicing.
Supervision or Training Duties:
Mentor KSAS staff in the field and office with regards to industry standards, methods, and procedures.
Must be accessible by phone to Project Mangers while project activities are underway.
This position will supervise fieldwork of large projects with up to 8 field staff.
Skills and Abilities:
- Experience supervising archaeological field crews
- Excellent supervisory and/or field management skills
- Familiarity with Secwepemc culture.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage concurrent activities, keeping staff and colleagues informed.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing.
- Strong analytical, organizational, coordinating and planning skills.
- Ability to verify, research and collect data and prepare reports and other documents.
- Proven ability to set priorities and meet project deadlines.
- Ability to take initiative.
- Strong tact and diplomacy.
- Strong teamwork and cooperation, problem solving and judgement skills.
Special Requirements:
Strong background in conducting and supervising archaeological projects.
Strong data management skills.

HOURS OF WORK: Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.
PAY GRADE: Starting at $35.97-$39.62 per hour depending on education and experience
