Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) is a fast-growing vibrant organization committed to the development and progress of its Band Members and Community.  As such, the TteS invites applications from qualified, highly motivated and dynamic individuals to fill the following position.

 

POSITION TITLE:                 Junior Archaeologist        

DEPARTMENT:                        Archeology Department

SUPERVISOR:                          Assistant Manager, Archeology

TERMS:                                    Seasonal (Backfill)

Purpose of Position:

The Junior Archaeologist participates in all fieldwork, research and analysis as needed including assessments, surveys, testing, monitoring and data recovery in both lab and field settings. Compile and compose field notes and summary reports.  All responsibilities are governed by the policies and bylaws of Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Office work (15%)
  • Conducting background research
  • Assist with project planning, preparation, logistics including mobilization and demobilization.
  • Liaising with community members, clients and archeology personnel.
  • Catalogue and curate project materials.
  • Preparing site forms.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the TteS policies, standards, and procedures.
  • Drafts reports in accordance with the BC Archaeology Branch permit requirements.
  • Maintains confidentiality on all matters relating to the affairs of the TteS.

 

  1. Fieldwork (80%)
  • Assisting with archaeological assessments and cultural heritage studies.
  • Recording and maintaining accurate field notes and digital records.
  • Pedestrian surveys, testing, monitoring and data recovery in the field.
  • Assist with site mapping.
  • Assist with evaluative unit excavation.
  • Makes recommendations, in consultation with supervisors and field technicians, regarding the conservation and interpretation of archaeological findings.
  • Works safely as per TteS safety policy.

 

 

  1. 5% other related duties as necessary.

 

Professional Certification, Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in archaeology or completion of an archaeology field school at an accredited university of college or equivalent field experience in the Secwépemc Nation.  
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities
  • Must have demonstrated technical writing, leadership, and communications skills.
  • Must possess Level 1 First Aid certificate.
  • Must possess knowledge and experience adhering to occupational heath and safety regulations.
  • Must possess a valid BC Class 5 driver’s license and experience with ATV’s, UTV’s, snowmobiles.
  • Must possess a clean driver abstract and maintain clean status throughout employment.
  • Must complete a Criminal Record Check and maintain clear status throughout employment.
  • Must be willing to take a pre-access drug and alcohol test and maintain throughout employment.
  • Must be physically fit and willing to work in challenging environments.

 

Financial Responsibility:

Ensure accuracy and timely submission of time sheets and expenses

 

Supervision or Training Duties:

Provide leadership, support, and effective communication to field technicians.  

 

Skills and Abilities:

    • Experience conducting/participating in impact assessments and excavations.   
    • Familiarity with Secwepemc culture.
    • Demonstrated ability to keep supervisors and colleagues informed.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing.
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
    • Ability to verify, research and collect data and prepare summary reports and other documents.
    • Ability to take initiative.
    • Ability to work in a team setting
    • Ability to work independently and as per permit methods with minimal oversight.
    • Strong tact and diplomacy.
    • Strong teamwork and cooperation, problem solving and judgement skills.

 

HOURS OF WORK:      Normal Day shifts – 7 hours. Non-normal shifts may be required.

PAY GRADE:                Starting at $27.34-$28.70/hour depending on education and experience
